It’s very full circle that I would be asked to speak on a screenwriting panel about writing Christmas movies with the Northwest Screenwriters Guild when I grew up in the Seattle area and always dreamed of being a writer.
It’s an honor to now do this fun and festive panel where I’ll be with some other wonderful screenwriters known for writing holiday movies!
We’ll be answering your screenwriting questions and giving our personal tips on how to write Christmas movies, how to sell Christmas movies and overall tips writing tips for screenwriters.

Karen Schaler is a three-time Emmy Award-winning storyteller, originally from the Northwest. In the last three years she has written five original Christmas movies and four Christmas novels, earning her the nickname in the press, “Christmas Karen.” Her movies include the Netflix hit A Christmas Prince, Hallmark’s Christmas Camp and Lifetime’s Every Day is Christmas starring Toni Braxton. Karen is currently in development for her next Christmas movie and is also creating a holiday musical feature film. After writing her Christmas Camp movie and books Karen has created a real-life Christmas Camp immersive experience, bringing her story to life, that she’s holding around the world, this year an adapted version virtually. www.karenschaler.com
Bob Saenz, screenwriter, author, and actor. His dozen plus produced works include “Help for the Holidays”, “Rescuing Madison”, “Sweet Surrender”, “Sound of Christmas”, “The Right Girl”, “Christmas in Love”, the comedy “Church People”, the theatrical black comedy thriller “Extracurricular Activities”, plus “The Christmas Yule Blog” and “The Farmer and the Belle” both new in 2020. He does rewrites, adaptations, and script polishes for hire on film and TV projects for Producers and Production Companies.
Author of the popular screenwriting book “That’s Not the Way It Works: a no-nonsense guide to the craft and business of screenwriting”, he speaks at writers’ conferences and film festivals across the country. His acting roles include a recurring character on the TV show “Nash Bridges”, “Angels in the Outfield”, Francis Ford Coppola’s “Jack”, David Fincher’s “Zodiac”, Finn Taylor’s “Unleashed”, “Disrupted”, and “The Village Barbershop”, among dozens of others.
Betsy Morris is a Philly girl now living and writing in the San Diego sun with her husband and her unnecessarily judgmental cats. Betsy likes to write comedy and romance—even when the project doesn’t really require either. She has written a number of indie pictures (TEN INCH HERO, LAST CALL AT MURRAY’S) as well as several TV projects (SNOWCOMING, A SONG FOR CHRISTMAS). She once won Austin Film Festival’s top Comedy award and, at any given time, is juggling a million different projects. Betsy also speaks fluent sarcasm and can turn anything into a bulleted list.
Kim Hornsby is a USA Today Bestselling Author as well as an award-winning screenwriter with feature scripts sold, optioned, and in development. Christmas in Crystal Creek is optioned with plans to film and air next year along with several other scripts in the works in Hollywood. Where Kim once juggled teaching scuba on Maui with singing professionally, she now juggles writing supernatural suspense with Christmas romances and one seems to balance the other nicely. With fifteen published novels, Kim writes full time, ignoring housework and sometimes family members to get her stories on the page. Her desk overlooks a treelined lake in the Seattle area with foot warming muses in the form of large rescue dogs.
